In my English class, we were talking about the word "compensate". As a checkpoint I asked my students, "How do you compensate for what you do not have or lost?".
I called a student and her answer surprised me. She said, "Mr. Lagarde, nothing."
I asked why. She said "I have everything."
At first, I was tempted to correct her but I asked why her answer was such.
My student answered, "because I have my family and friends."
I stopped and smiled. That answer made my day. I realized that we, as humans, were programmed to think that we have insatiable needs. But it took a kid to make me realize that we may not have everything we want but most of the time we have everything we need.
